What architects are actually using AI for in 2026 — and where they still don't trust it

TL;DR — 64% of architects are now experimenting with AI in their daily workflows, but only one in five firms has actually integrated it across multiple processes. The biggest reported time savings aren't in design at all. They're in video production, content, and material or asset generation. Adoption is wide and shallow, and the gap comes down to one thing: what happens when an image is wrong in front of a client.
A new industry survey of roughly 800 architects and designers, conducted by Chaos in collaboration with Architizer, puts numbers on something most studios already sensed. AI is in the building. It is just not doing what the headlines suggested it would.
Worth noting upfront: the survey was run by a rendering software vendor and published as sponsored content, so read the enthusiasm accordingly. The underlying data is still the most useful snapshot available of how firms are actually working right now.

Where AI is actually saving architects time
Among architects already using AI tools, 86% say it saves time or speeds up their workflow. Nearly a third report major efficiency gains rather than marginal ones.
More than half save at least five hours per week, with larger firms generally seeing bigger returns. That is a real number. Five hours is most of a billable day recovered every week.
Then the survey gets more interesting. The single largest time savings reported came from video editing and content production, where some firms said they were saving more than 15 hours per week. Another 25% of respondents said their biggest gains came from material selection or asset generation.
Look at that list again. Video editing. Content production. Material libraries. Asset generation.
None of those are design. They are production and communication tasks that sit around the design. The survey shows architects using AI most successfully where the output is fast, iterative, and disposable — concept imagery, text-to-image exploration, refining existing renderings, and building visual assets for presentations.
That distinction matters more than the adoption percentage, and it explains almost everything else in the data.

Why one in five went all in, and the rest didn't
The firms that fully integrated AI report noticeably higher satisfaction than the dabblers. Familiarity compounds. Deeper integration produces better outcomes, which produces more integration.
Between 73% and 93% of respondents plan to increase their AI use in the coming year, depending on where they are starting from. Even among the slowest adopters, 10% expect to expand.
But the holdouts are not being stubborn. Architects who haven't adopted AI cited output accuracy and reliability, time and budget constraints, workflow integration problems, and concerns about originality and authorship. Some said outright that they worry AI will cheapen architectural work.
Those are legitimate professional objections, not technophobia. And there's a warning sign buried in the same data: more than half of non-users said they feel pressure to adopt, either from industry trends or from internal leadership.
Pressure is the worst possible reason to adopt anything. A firm that brings in AI because a partner read an article will get exactly the inconsistent, badly integrated results that the survey's current users are already complaining about.
The accuracy problem is a client problem
Here's the part the survey data implies but doesn't say directly.
An inconsistent concept image costs nothing. You generate twelve, you throw out eleven, nobody outside the studio ever sees the rejects. The cost of being wrong is a few seconds.
A client-facing rendering is a different object entirely. It goes into an approval package, a pro forma, a lender presentation, an HOA submission, or a listing. Somebody makes a financial decision based on it.
When that image is wrong, the cost isn't a wasted generation. It's a change order, a permit delay, a broker's credibility, or a homeowner who signs off on a kitchen that can't be built at that dimension.
This is the difference between an image that looks right and an image that is traceable — back to the plan set, the elevations, the actual finish schedule, the real site conditions, the current revision. AI is very good at the first thing. It has no mechanism for the second.
Which is why the survey's own finding makes sense: firms with working in-house AI workflows still outsource final visualization. They're not outsourcing the pixels. They're outsourcing accountability for the image being correct.
The liability sits on the image, not on the tool that made it.
What this means for your firm
Use AI where the output is disposable. Concept exploration, mood boards, internal presentations, marketing content. That's where the survey's 15-hour weeks are coming from.
Keep a human on anything a client signs. If the image supports a decision involving money, permits, or construction, someone needs to be able to point from the render back to the drawing.
Decide who owns authorship before you adopt a tool, not after. It was one of the top objections in the survey for a reason, and it's easier to answer as a policy than as a dispute.
Don't adopt under pressure. Half-integrated AI produces exactly the inconsistency current users report. Pick one workflow, do it properly, then expand.
